Jolly good Fellas

Bandra’s iconic college hangout, JATC, may have left their chappals and shorts-clad customers disappointed with their new avatar, but a recently-opened eatery, not so far away, may just prove to be their retreat. Fellas has all the ingredients of a friendly neighbourhood hangout — a café-esque ambience, an ever-smiling proprietor, easy-on-the-pocket prices, tons of board games to help while away the hours and even a big, black Rottweiler tied to a leash.
The only hang-up here is that unlike the mayonnaise-whipped double burgers, this one boasts of a menu designed for calorie-watchers. And that isn’t always a bad thing. Like us, you may cringe at the thought of Spinach-Pineapple-Apple Juice (Rs. 79) and other such concoctions, but a swig later, you may summon mommy’s “greens are good” adage.
The green LED signboard brings to mind images of a vegetarian eatery or specifically, of a vegetarian chain called Falafel, but rest assured, neither are accurate. This roughly 50-seater restaurant, with inside and open-air seating options, serves healthy vegetarian and non-veg fare. Health food may conventionally be seen as a downer for most foodies, but the good part here is that although they serve leafy greens and grilled meat, the flavour is not lacking.
The plate of Grilled Jumbo Prawns (Rs. 299) with three prawns sautéed in garlic sauce is not only value for money, but also nibble-worthy down to the last bite. The lettuce salad (Rs. 149) with asparagus and walnut was however, easily passable.
The menu has a variety of soups, sandwiches and breakfast options to choose from. However, there is only chicken and seafood to chew on for meat lovers, as the menu steers clear of red meat. The Caribbean Grilled Chicken (Rs. 249) laced with BBQ sauce and served with Dauphinoise potatoes (that adds a hint of Wasabi punch to it), is wholesome. For the ’burbs’ Gold’s Gym-pumping, organic food-munching diners, Fellas could be a fruitful stopover, literally.
