A reporter of a Bengali daily was arrested in Bardhaman on Tuesday on the charge of abetment to suicide as a local girl took her life after an article flashed her name in connection with a sex racket operating in Mumbai.

Circle inspector, Gour Mukherjee said Asima Khatoon committed suicide as her name was mentioned in the article written by Prabir Chattopadhyay of the Kolkata based daily 'Pratidin'. "Besides, we have other evidence to prove the guilt", Mukherjee said.

Following the arrest made in the wee hours, local journalists demonstrated before the sadar police station demanding his release.

A spokesman of the agitating scribes said the arrest was illegal as the write-up was based on fact.
