The media fraternity in the city has condemned the police for allegedly assaulting and falsely implicating a reporter of a Hindi daily on the complaint of a Haryana Roadways bus driver and conductor.

Several mediapersons organised a meeting on Sunday to protest police brutality and high-handedness.

Naveen Panchal was travelling in his car with his mother and brother Dinesh, when an altercation broke out with the bus driver.

"When we reached Rajiv Chowk, I asked the bus driver to give way as he had blocked the road. The bus conductor Gopal, however, passed lewd comments which led to an argument between us. My mother intervened in the matter and requested the conductor to calm down, but he hit me and my mother and fled the spot," the journalist said. Naveen informed the police about the incident which intercepted the bus and took both parties to the Manesar police station.

"Here, we had a scuffle again and two policemen along with others assaulted us. The SHO remained a silent spectator during the entire episode," alleged Dinesh. Later, on a complaint of the bus conductor and driver, Naveen and Dinesh were arrested and are presently in custody.

Manesar police station SHO Jitender Rana, however, claimed that the FIR was registered on the complaint of the roadways staff. He denied that policeman assaulted Naveen and his brother.
