The Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia Patrakarita Samman for 2009 has been conferred on senior journalist and social activist Madhav Govind Vaidya.
The award was presented to 86-year-old Vaidya at the Medical College Auditorium in Gwalior on Friday in the presence of a number of dignitaries, including some Madhya Pradesh Ministers and academicians.
Instituted by the Swadesh Group of Newspapers in 2005, the award is given every year to eminent writers for their contribution in the filed of journalism.
Vaidya, who has written several books, worked as Principal at Hislop College in Nagpur before switching over to journalism.
Speaking on the occasion, Vaidya said newspapers must act as critics of the government and not as its allies.
Creative criticism is an important benchmark for any government to deal effectively with challenges, he said.
