At a time when man-elephant conflicts are on the rise, this city witnessed a rare spectacle of one tusker zealously guarding its drunken mahout in deep sleep under its bulk.
According to eyewitnesses, the mahout, who was marching tusker Chandu, on Monday was lured by a road-side toddy shop and had a peg too many.
He returned with a heavy head and fell asleep under the bulk of the tusker, unmindful of the din and bustle around.
The snoring mahout with a vigilant tusker guarding him soon attracted a crowd. Some concerned people even tried to drag the man away, but were warded off by the elephant waving its trunk menacingly.
The 'show' went on for about an hour before a couple of policemen came to the scene and woke up the sozzled mahout. By this time, the assistant mahout of Chandu also appeared on the scene to help his senior.
