If the heat is slowing you down, it is in your best interest to stay in touch with a doctor. With cases of heat stroke on the rise, experts say the best way to beat the heat is to remain indoors, slow down and remain hydrated.
During a heat wave, the body has to work hard to keep the body temperature normal. So, ensure a healthy fluid intake and eat before stepping out. “Though people know they should drink a lot of water to remain hydrated, they forget that it is equally important to have a full stomach before stepping out. Many of our patients land in the hospital unconscious because they are weakened by the heat. We are advising our patients to drink a glass of water every 15-20 minutes to replace lost body fluid. More importantly, no one should leave the house empty stomach,” said Dr HS Heera, Department of Medicine, Lok Nayak Hospital.
Since sweating results in the loss of body salt, fresh lime water is the best energy drink, say doctors. “Fresh lime water, which has a little of salt and sugar energises the body instantly as it provides the body sodium, potassium and sugar, among other things. We are getting patients suffering from heat exhaustion and cramps everyday,” said Dr SP Byotra, Senior Consultant, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital.
