President APJ Abdul Kalam on Tuesday voiced concern over some developing countries being in danger of terrorist attacks as they have been "singularly" chosen by many websites to provide high resolution pictures about them.
"When you look deeper into it, you would realise that the specific laws in some countries regarding spatial observations over their territory and UN recommendations about the display of spatial observations is inadequate," he said.
"Most of you may or may not be aware that that the high resolutions pictures are freely available on the internet provided by many sites including www.Fas.Org and Google Earth," he told the 37th All India Police Science Congress.
Observing that one of the major revolutions of information had been the advent of the World Wide Web, he said in the earlier days, the intelligence information used to be gathered by field officers working directly near the source of information.
But on Tuesday, Kalam said, an intelligent mining of the data coming out in many newspapers, websites and so on could give ample information about possible groups, their intentions and their connectivity's.
"A regular monitoring of the internet could give you indicators of the pre-formation activities of terrorist groups and their origins and supporters," he said.
Kalam also noted that in "the scene of cross border terrorism", the nation's capabilities such as communication, rail and business infrastructure become exposed and vulnerable. "In this scenario, the intelligence agencies and the police have to take an integrated approach."
