Kalmadi plays down infighting in Pune Cong

india Updated: Mar 26, 2009 20:55 IST

After getting renominated by Congress in the midst of a vociferous opposition within the party, Suresh Kalmadi, sitting MP from Pune, on Thursday played down the systematic campaign carried out against him by five aspirants including a former minister and two members of Maharashtra legislature.

"Congress is a big party and everybody is entitled to seek party candidature," he said at a press conference in Pune when asked to react to the intra-party infighting that saw his detractors approaching the Congress high command with a representation against his renomination for the Pune seat.

Interestingly, in addition to former state minister Balasaheb Shivarkar who was joined by Mohan Joshi and Ulhas Pawar, both MLCs, the state Congress spokesman Anantrao Gadgil too had teamed up with Kalmadi bashers with a contention that if he (Kalmadi) was fielded again, the party's winning prospects would suffer.

Kalmadi who will be locked into a virtually straight fight with BJP's Anil Shirole, said he would be fully backed by Congress ally NCP in his election campaign which would be inaugurated by NCP president Sharad Pawar.
