National and state film award winner Tara formally joined the BJP at a brief function in Bangalore on Sunday.
Speaking on the occasion, Tara said her decision to join BJP was influenced by the party's women-centric programmes. The actress said she was impressed with BJP's pro-woman policies and implementation, made in the assembly elections (2008).
State unit BJP President Sadananada Gowda termed her entry as a 'bonus' to the party and said the Kannada film industry had contributed greatly to the party's fortunes in the recent election.
Welcoming the actress into the party fold,he said artistes from the Karnataka film world have been impressed with the work carried out by BJP the last 10 months.
Tara had bagged the best actress award in 2005 for her role as a young Muslim mother who copes with life after her husband deserts her in 'Hasina',a film directed by Girish Kasaravalli. She was also honoured with the state's best actress award in 2001 for her role in the film 'Kanooru Heggadathi'.
Apart from Tara, TV artist Shylaja Somashekar also joined the BJP on Sunday. The function was attended, among others, by Ministers Katta Subramaniam Naidu and R Ashok.
