More than 450 children of four primary and junior high schools became seriously sick when they ate 'ladoos' given to them as refreshment after Independence Day celebrations in Chaubeypur.

All the kids have been admitted to different government and private hospitals — 25 of them were in the intensive care unit.

Doctors treating the kids said the sweet was soiled and caused the food poisoning. "Teams of doctors are examining more children in Manav Gram Sabha to find out if there more who had eaten the ladoo," said Dr RP Yadav, chief medical officer.

The police, however, have arrested owner of Ganesh Mishthan Bhandar, which supplied the sweet, and other staff members. The shop located in the plush Motijheel has been sealed and its preparations were sent for examination.

"Tough action is being initiated and people responsible will not be spared. We have registered a criminal case," said Dr Roshan Jacob, district magistrate. "As of now our focus is well-being of the children."

The sweets were bought on Thursday night by the village headman Ramu Mishra. They were distributed to children in the morning. Some of them consumed them on the school campus, many went home where they not only ate but also shared the sweets with others.

In an hour, the children complaining of nausea, followed by vomiting and unconsciousness.

This created a furore in the village where the only primary health centre became crammed with kids, leaving the sole doctor with no option but to inform the authorities.

Medical vans, rushed from Kanpur, moved the children to the hospital. Maximum numbers of 250 children were admitted at Rama Medical College and rest were at different government health centres.

"Condition of small kids is critical. They didn't go to school but they were given to eat by their siblings. Majority of such kids was in intensive care of medical college," Krishna Mohan, a villager said over phone. Thousands of people were at the hospitals.

District magistrate who visited the hospitals, ordered an inquiry into the incident. It will be conducted separately to the one by the police. The police have detained the village headman Ramu Mishra and were recording the statement of teachersand other staff member of the schools.
