Agitated over the death of a classmate, students of an agricultural university here pelted stones at the residences of the dean and registrar and set afire vehicles, leaving around six policemen injured.
As the protest spiralled, the administration of Chandrashekhar Azad University on Saturday postponed examinations and asked the students to vacate the hostels.
Trouble started last night when BSAC-IIIrd year student Sunil Yadav fell ill after eating dinner. His friends took him to Dean Prahlad Singh's house and asked him to arrange for an ambulance, police said.
As it took long to arrange the ambulance, Yadav was taken in an autorickshaw to the hospital where he died.
As soon as the news of Yadav's death spread, the students staged a protest and set afire the university ambulance, which arrived at the hospital, and also the dean's car and scooter.
The angry students also entered registrar VP Kannaujia's residence and ransacked it, setting his car on fire. The mob till 2 am was roaming around the sity campus, pelting stones and damaging vehicles.
When the police arrived on the scene, the protesters set on fire two police jeeps, injuring SP (traffic) Ramlal and around five other policemen. Police resorted to lathicharge and detained some of the agitating students.
Fire brigade was called in the university campus to extinguish the fire engulfing the vehicles, Ramlal said.
"The miscreants have been identified and hostels vacated. An inquiry has been ordered," DIG, Kanpur, Hariram Sharma said.
