Forty of the BJP’s 106 MLAs revolted against the embattled Karnataka chief minister BS Yeddyurappa on Wednesday, after the Opposition accused him of misusing his position to de-notify state-owned land to favour his kin.

A senior BJP leader, apparently looking for a comeback to Karnataka politics, is known to have persuaded the 40 MLAs to sign letters expressing their lack of confidence in the CM.

Forty is more than one-third of the BJP’s strength in the 221-member assembly. These members can formally split from the party and avoid disqualification.
