Karnataka governor HR Bharadwaj on Sunday raised concerns about an investigation into attacks on churches in the state which gives a clean chit to the ruling BJP and its saffron allies.

"I am disturbed," Bhardwaj said, adding he had received only a synopsis of the Justice Somasekhara Commission report, released a week ago.

The commission was set up following uproar over the attacks in Mangalore, Udupi, Chikamangalur, Kolar, Chikaballapur, Bellary and Davangere districts in September 2008.

The report attributed the attacks to circulation of literature derogatory to Hindus and issues of conversion of Hindus to Christianity. "I don’t see any religious conversion in the state," Bhardwaj said. The report also denied any collusion between the administrative officers and the attackers.

"Though the commission found some attacks to be deliberate, well-planned, communal, with fundamentalism brewing since several years, it failed to identify people or groups behind them," the governor said.
