DMK president M Karunanidhi on Friday welcomed the Union cabinet nod for enhancing reservation for women at Panchayat level and hoped that a similar quota for women in Parliament and Legislative Assemblies also would be implemented soon.
"The (cabinet) decision is welcome. When the DMK came to power in 1996, it implemented 33% reservation in local body polls, paving the way for more than 44,000 elected women representatives," he said.
Writing in party mouthpiece 'Murasoli,' he said it was DMK's "desire and request" that a similar provision of 50% reservation was "soon" implemented for the fairer sex in Parliament and Assembly also.
The Union cabinet had on Thursday given its nod for enhancing reservation for women at Panchayat level to at least 50% to ensure better representation, particularly of those belonging to SC/ST.
On Jayalalithaa government forming special cells in police department to handle land grab cases relating to the previous DMK regime, Karunanidhi referred to reports in a section of media saying that it would only target the DMK.
