Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam patriarch M Karunanidhi was re-elected as party president for the 11th time at the party’s general council meeting held here today. K Anbazhagan and MK Stalin were also re-elected as the general secretary and treasurer respectively.
Karunanidhi’s daughter and Rajya Sabha member Kanimozhi was elevated to secretary of the party’s women’s wing. While she has been part of the party for several years now, this is the first time she has been given a plum post.
All of them were elected unanimously. At the meeting it was announced that DMK veteran Duraimurgan would become principal secretary — a post created for him.
Trichy Siva, a Rajya Sabha member, and A Raja, former Union minister who was named as an accused in the 2G scam, were appointed as propaganda secretaries, while Pughazhendi and Singara Rathinasababapthy were appointed as the students’ wing and labour wing secretaries respectively
The general council meet made it clear that the party is gearing up to take on the ruling AIADMK and make a come back after electoral drubbings in the state assembly polls in 2011 and the Lok Sabha polls last year.
DMK has also upped its ante against the BJP at the Centre terming it as communal and asked all political parties to bury their differences and fight the saffron party. We will not allow the BJP to gain a foothold in Tamil Nadu,” Karunanidhi said during the meeting.
