Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Wednesday requested Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to permit all those who had applied to undertake Haj pilgrimage from Tamil Nadu to do so.

In a letter to Singh, Karunanidhi said the Centre had permitted only 2,461 Muslims from Tamil Nadu to undertake Haj this year.

But 4,990 people had applied this year for the pilgrimage and of them 2,829 did not get the opportunity. "The Centre should permit all of them to undertake the pilgrimage," he said.

He had also written a similar letter to the Union Minister of State for External Affairs, E Ahamed.
