A leopard was shot dead by the army after the animal attacked a patrolling party at a village in south Kashmir's Anantnag district on Monday afternoon.

Wildlife officials said the leopard was killed only after it had injured six people, including a policeman and an army jawan.

The leopard had apparently entered the village from a nearby jungle, as the snow forces many such animals in winters to look for food in urban areas.

The animal was shot at a close range with an automatic weapon by the security personnel.

The incident took place at Khewan village, bordering Kulgam and Anantnag.
