Kashmir hikes promotion quota

india Updated: Nov 17, 2007 15:06 IST

The Jammu and Kashmir government has enhanced quotas to ensure the promotion of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe employees in government services.

The cabinet took the decision on Friday evening after examining the recommendations of a panel set up to look into the matter. Former chief secretary C Phunsog headed the panel.

Nearly 40 per cent of Jammu and Kashmir's 11 million people are Dalits or tribals. They are mostly concentrated in Jammu region and Ladakh and in parts of the Kashmir Valley.
