Kedarnath pilgrimage suspended till Wednesday

As the incessant rains continued to lash Uttarakhand on Sunday, the Rudraprayag district administration decided to suspend Kedarnath pilgrimage further till July 23 Wednesday. The administration had first suspended pilgrimage for two days on July 16 then it was extended till July 20.

"We will resume pilgrimage as the weather improves" said Rajeev Langhar, district magistrate of Rudraprayag. According to DM, anyone will not be allowed to move beyond Sonprayag. The pilgrims have to scale around 15 kms tough route beyond Kedarnath on foot.

Meanwhile the major rivers of state including Bhagirathi, Mandakini, Saryu, and Ganga continued to flow close to danger mark. The disaster management and mitigation department informed that Rishikesh – Kedarnath highway was blocked at Sirobagar while Rishikesh – Gangotri highway was closed near Sukhitop. The Rishikesh-Badrinath national highway was also blocked till filing of this copy.

The road network has been affected due to bad rains and landslide at several places of the state. Alone 60 motor roads were blocked in Pauri district. Similarly 16 roads were blocked in rural Dehradun. The rains also blocked Pithoragarh-Almora national highway. The metrological department has predicted light to moderate rains in parts of the state in the next 48 hours. The Chamoli and Pauri districts are particularly likely to receive heavy rainfall.
