STATE ELECTION Commissioner Aparmita Prasad Singh directed the divisional commissioner and the DIG of Allahabad to keep a close watch on the activities of Food and Civil Supplies Minister Raghuraj Pratap Singh alias Raja Bhaiyya during the nagar panchayat poll on Friday. The DIG has also been directed to ensure deployment of police force at sensitive spots to check rigging and violence during the poll.

Leader of the BJP in Vidhan Sabha Lalji Tandon met Singh and expressed apprehension over peaceful and fair poll in Pratapgarh district in view of the terror tactics being adopted by Raja Bhaiyya. Taking cognizance of Tandon’s complaint, the SEC decided to tighten the noose around Raja Bhaiyya.

Meanwhile, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has called for check on activities of ministers during poll. Leader of the BSP in Vidhan Sabha Swami Prasad Maurya alleged on direction of the Khadi Industry Minister Raja Ram Pandey, BSP leader Barjesh Mishra was taken into custody by the police in Ghadwara area of Pratapgarh district.

“While Pandey was moving freely in the area terrorizing the rival political parties workers, the district administration remained a mute spectator to the terror tactics of the minister”, he said. Demanding interference of the Governor in the issue, Maurya said the State Election Commission had failed to take action against the culprit.

SEC on mayoral announcement

The State Election Commission has restrained the District Magistrate (District Returning Officer) from announcing the result of the Mayor post in all the 12 Nagar Nigams.

Additional election commissioner Vinay Priya Dubey said the results of mayor posts would be announced only after seeking the permission of the SEC. Dubey said if difference of victory between the winner and loser contesting for chairman, nagar palika parishad was mere one per cent then district returning officers would declare the result after seeking the permission of the SEC.

The SEC has received the report of the Gonda DM as well as that of the observer. “We are studying the report of both the officers and recording the statement of leaders of various political parties. Final decision will be taken before November 6,” an SEC officer said.

SEC staff officer BK Singh Yadav has returned from Hardoi after concluding inquiry into the complaint of rigging. According to sources, Yadav would submit his report to the commissioner on Friday.
