Police have stepped up vigil after some migrant workers with a brick unit were threatened by a group and given an ultimatum to leave the state.

A gang of 12 unidentified men visited the workers, who hail from Assam and are employed with a hollow-brick manufacturing unit at Manjeri in Malappuram district, early August 17. They told them to leave Kerala by August 20 or they would be harmed, police said.

The unit owner filed a police compliant the next day and an investigation was on. The locals, said the police, promised all help to the 14 workers. There have been no reports of exodus of the people from Northeast from the southern state.
