Sreelakshmi Suresh is not your average eight-year-old. When children her age have to be torn away from the television to their homework, she is spinning grand web designs. To her credit, this fourth standard student of Presentation High Secondary School here has already proved her mettle by designing her school’s official website.
Awards are nothing new to Sreelakshmi. She is probably the youngest member of the Association of American Webmasters. Seventeen other national and international recognitions, including the Global Internet Directories Award and Golden Web Award, have come her way.
The daughter of an advocate father, Suresh Menon, and a schoolteacher mother, Viju Suresh, Sreelakshmi’s brush with the digital world began when she was just four. “When she was playing with the paint and brush on Microsoft, I advised her to do something different,” Suresh says. He helped her initially, but she soon took to the task like fish to water. And there was no looking back.
Soon, she was designing a website for her school. “After studies, I used to spend hours in front of the computer. Since my school did not have an official site, I took it as a challenge to design one,” Sreelakshmi says.
She is already a role model for her classmates. “She is an inspiration even to grown-ups. I must say our school is blessed to have such a talented girl,” says Sister Roselit, the headmistress.
But Viju is a little worried that her daughter spends too many hours in front of the computer screen. “I don’t want her to strain her eyes too much at such a young age,” she says.
