Aamir Khan's family on Friday came out in support of the actor in the controversy involving the custody of his younger brother, Faisal.
On Wednesday, the Bandra metropolitan magistrate had rejected Aamir’s custody application and awarded temporary custody of Faisal — who the actor says is suffering from mental illness — to their father Tahir Hussain.
The statement, signed by 22 family members including Aamir’s mother Zeenat Hussain, sister Nikhat, former wife Reena and current wife Kiran, said: “We feel the need to express our utter shock, disgust and contempt at the public statements of Tahir Husain and Faisal Khan… their offensive allegations, malicious lies and pathetic behaviour are truly shameful”.
Nikhat said: “Their behaviour is all the more appaling given that Aamir has supported both his father and brother in every way possible for the last 15 years… Unfortunately, Aamir’s goodness has only earned him their envy and hatred.” Faisal had alleged that Aamir had kept him prisoner in his house and forced him to take medicines for paranoid schizophrenia although he was normal.
However, the statement claimed that Faisal has been suffering from mental illness for years. “Faisal is unwell and in need of urgent medical attention,” the statement said.
“However, seeing that all Aamir’s efforts have been met with such hostility, we think it’s all for the best that Tahir Husain has been given custody of Faisal.”Kiran’s father and brother have also signed the statement.
While Tahir was unavailable for comment, his lawyer Usman Vanjara said it was evident that both Tahir and Aamir love Faisal but “the two should sit together and sort the matter”.
“By issuing the statement the family’s problems cannot be solved,” Vanjara said.
"After Wednesday’s judgement, Aamir’s lawyer told me that the actor will discuss the matter only with Tahir, not Faisal. But I insisted that Faisal be present as the matter involves him.”
