Sanjeev Khanna is being grilled by investigators about his businesses and the motive behind the Sheena Bora murder. Some of the questions are: How did he start his Kolkata restaurant 1658 Bar and Kitchen? How did he participate in the restoration of an old mansion called Bawali Rajbari? Where did he get the money from? What prompted him to get in touch with Indrani? How long has he been in touch with Indrani? Did she give him the money?
The Mumbai police are now going through the records of emails and phone calls between Indrani and Khanna to unravel the missing links in the run-up to the murder. Few details, however, emerged from Khanna’s interrogation on Saturday after he complained of an upset stomach and hypertension. His lawyer Shreyansh Mithare first moved an application seeking access to Khanna while in police custody.
Mithare later moved an application that sought medicines and home food be given to Khanna. Mithare said his client had complained of indigestion and was suffering from hypertension for which he needed medicines.
While the court allowed his lawyer to meet him in custody, it has asked Khar police officers to file a report on Khanna’s health by Monday, when the police’s plea to extend his custody will be heard.
Police sources told HT that Khanna, who primarily ran a cable business in Kolkata, among other businesses, received a substantial amount of money from undisclosed sources soon after Sheena was murdered. Police officers will go through the financial transactions that Khanna had after April 24, 2012. The police said after Khanna received money, he along with Ajay Rawla and one more person started a restaurant, 1658 Bar and Kitchen, in Chowringhee Lane at Dharamtala in Kolkata.
While there is no clarity on how he raised his share in partnership business, police sources said it was suspicious the business was started around three years ago, after Bora was murdered, said police sources. It is also learnt that Indrani bought a flat for Khanna in Howrah around the same period. Police sources also said Khanna was involved in restoring a Rajbari into a heritage resort at Budge Budge in 24-South Parganas . The police will probe if this was in lieu of his participation in the crime.
At least Rs150 crore was found swindled from the media company run by Indrani (9x Media) and it is suspected Khanna was a beneficiary among others, said police sources. “We will all the financial transactions between Indrani and Khanna to know the real motive,” said a senior police officer, requesting anonymity.
