As per the latest census, Kharahal, spreading across 2,366 hectares and comprising five gram panchayats with a population of 12,384, is the largest village in the state, surpassing the population of Nirmand village, which was earlier the largest village of the state.

Located on the left bank of the Beas river in Kullu district, the village is famous for Bijli Mahadev and Ma Durga temples, which attract thousands of devotees every year.

The village offers fertile land and favourable environment for horticulture and agriculture, which are the main sources of income. The farmers grow cash crops like apple, pear, plum and vegetables.

On September 13, 2010, a cloudburst hit the valley, causing massive destruction. Kharahal comprises Puid, Gharakar, Jaipur, Kinja and Chansari.
