Niranjan Rajbath (33), the prime accused in the Malad double murder case, is a wanted convict in an attempt to murder case in Bihar, the police said on Friday.
Bhavna Sanghvi (54) and her mother-in-law Reva (79) were found murdered in their Kirti Kunj residence at Liberty Gardens on May 28. The killers fled with jewellery worth Rs 1.2 lakh.
Crime Branch officials said Bhavna’s husband Ramesh, who is physically challenged and works in an insurance company, had bought an autorickshaw five years ago and hired Niranjan to drive it.
Niranjan, who used to drop Ramesh to his Borivli office every day, had quit in April.
On Wednesday, the Crime Branch arrested two of Niranjan’s accomplices from Bihar and are on the lookout for Niranjan and his third accomplice.
Sources in the Crime Branch said Niranjan had been booked for assaulting a man in his hometown two years ago.
But he escaped to Mumbai before the court sentenced him to five years’ imprisonment.
“Had his employer checked his background with the police before employing him, the murders would have not taken place,” said Firoz Patel, a senior police official.
