Even as activist and former IPS officer Kiran Bedi’s name for BJP’s CM candidate gains ground in Delhi with Bedi herself tweeting that she was not averse to the idea of joining politics, the Delhi unit of the party remains a divided house.

With Delhi Assembly re-elections inevitable, senior BJP sources said the party was looking at other names besides Delhi BJP chief Harsh Vardhan. Vardhan was the BJP’s chief ministerial candidate for the assembly polls last year but had failed to get even a simple majority.

But Bedi’s name has been met with a lot of resistance within the state BJP with a number of party workers calling her an ‘outsider’. Vardhan said ‘it is a non-issue within the BJP’. Some feel that the party won’t risk considering an outsider after having won all seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi.

“The fact that her (Bedi’s) name is cropping up every now and then is an indication that there is some debate going on within the party... it’s the new politics that the party is looking to move towards. She can be pitted against AAP’s Arvind Kejriwal as she was also a part of the anti-corruption movement,” said a senior BJP leader.

The BJP is also concerned that Vardhan has too much on his plate. “If he is given a ministerial berth at the centre, the party will have to look for a new name. There is a leadership crisis within the BJP at the state level,” added another leader.

Despite repeated attempts Bedi could not be contacted but she had tweeted Tuesday: “I no more rule out entering Indian political service on capability basis. I am moving towards some flexibility in this”. Later, she tweeted that she is looking to “strengthen Modi’s hands in nation re-building”.
