Virat Kohli has been retained as captain for Delhi’s next match against Maharashtra, starting on December 8. The decision, said DDCA selection committee chairman Chetan Chauhan, is the outcome of Kohli’s fine leadership in the last match, and the need to groom a youngster for the future.
The move becomes significant given that Aakash Chopra, the regular Delhi skipper this season, is available for the match. He missed the last match against Saurashtra because of his wedding on December 2.
“This is a very crucial match for us in terms of making it to the knockout stage. We need someone who’s high on confidence to lead the side in this game. Aakash hasn’t been amongst runs this season and has just got married. So we are trying to take pressure off him so that he can come up with big scores,” explained Chauhan. In five innings this season Chopra has managed 55 runs with a highest of 22.
Kohli, however, will not be available for Delhi's last match in the league phase, against Bengal, as he will be away on national duty in the ODIs against Sri Lanka.
