The next time you take a flight, be sure to check the washroom carefully. If you are lucky, you might actually strike gold.
On Monday, during a routine maintenance check in a Jet Airways aircraft in Kolkata, 24 gold bars, weighing 24 kg, were found tucked away behind the commode. It was not the fabled treasure of Unnao. But Rs. 7.5 crore is not to be sneezed at either. It was a case of history repeating itself. “In 2007, fake Chinese cellphones and gold bars were recovered from the washroom of an aircraft here,” said a customs official.
Customs officials said the bars bore the stamp of United Arab Emirates and were probably on way to Mumbai.
