Kolkata: Woman gang-raped in autorickshaw

A woman in Kolkata was allegedly gang-raped in an autorickshaw at Mahestala, on the southern fringes of the city, on July 31.

A woman in Kolkata was allegedly gang-raped in an autorickshaw at Mahestala, on the southern fringes of the city, on July 31.

Three of the accused have been arrested, but the prime accused is still on the run. The victim has been admitted to a hospital.

According to the police, the victim was allegedly taken in an autorickshaw to a desolate place, given some narcotics and gang-raped.

Sheikh Jiauddin Mohammad, one of the accused, was arrested and after interrogating him, the police arrested two others involved. But the main accused, Raj, is still on the run. The victim’s family members lodged a police complaint on August 1.

Over the past few months, Bengal has seen a spate of crimes committed against women. A young girl was attacked and acid was thrown on her face in Tamluk district of West Bengal on July 24.

On July 24, the body of a seven-year-old girl was found hanging from a tree in Midnapore district. The police suspect she had been raped and killed due to a dispute between two families.
