TEAMS OF KPRP, SVD Vidya Bhavan, St Edmond and St Antony’s on Sunday sailed into the quarterfinals of the Eugene D’Souza Memorial Football Tournament being organised at St. Joseph’s Co-ed School playground. Infant Jesus, Holy Family, Habibganj, St. Joseph’s, Idgah Hills and Christ the King qualified for the last eight on the last Sunday.
The mood in every team was upbeat as it was a do or die situation and their last chance for place in the quarterfinals. In league round, matches on Sunday were the last ones. A good number of spectators were present on the occasion.
In the first match played between host KPRP and Holy Family, Habibganj, the former registered an easy 2-0 win. Though the match was a formality for both teams as they have already registered their name in the quarterfinal from Group A. Anil Xalxo and Rajesh Kullu scored one goal each for their team. The third team ICYM, Bhopal, is out of the tournament.
In the second match, SVD Vidya Bhavan defeated Barkheda 2-1. It was a close contest between both teams till the last minute. In the first half, the Berkheda team took an important lead through a solitary goal. But things changed in the last part of the second half when SVD not only equalised the score but also won the match. Last five minutes were the most exciting as both teams demonstrated their best.
The day belonged to SVD as the team managed to net two goals. Dilip and Remish of SVD scored one goal each in the last five minutes. Berkheda is out of the tournament, as they could not score even one goal.
The third match was played between St. Edmond, Campion and Christ the King, Bairagarh. St. Edmond, Campion won the match 1-0. Sushil Kujur was the scorer.
St. Antony’s, Kolar Road, and Assumption, Arera Colony, played the last league match of the tournament. St. Antony’s, Kolar Road, defeated Assumption 2-1. The third team of the ‘Group D,’ St. Joseph’s Church, Idgah Hills, has already qualified for the quarterfinals after defeating Assumption and draw with St. Antony’s, Kolar Road.
