Till now, we knew Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as a hard-hitting, straight-talking administrator. But after the Nano victory, Hindutva’s old posterboy is on a roll. Dipping generously into mythology, the ‘good M’ said that the Nano’s move from Singur in West Bengal to his state was like Krishna’s birth, adding that like Yashoda — Krishna’s foster mother, in case you don’t have your Amar Chitra Kathas nearby — the Gujarat government will take care of the project. Mr Modi also revealed that when he heard that Tata Motors was moving out of Singur, he sent a text message to Ratan Tata: ‘Swagatam’. Ok, so Naren-bhai had Ratan’s number.
But now that some people — 23 Rajputs to be precise — have crawled out of the woodwork and demanding compensation ‘their land’ in Sanand, where the Tata factory is to be located, one wonders what Mr Modi’s reaction might be.
Will he remain the happy, mythology-spouting Vikas Purush friend of Ratan? Or will he start flaying about in anger and frustration — like Buddhadev Bhattacharjee?
