Kunal Khemu too busy to breathe

Soon to be seen in Traffic Signal, the actor speaks to Rachana Dubey on films and life on and off screen.

He has storm-curled his hair. If the child actor-turned-hero is to be believed, women from across the world send him sms messages, phone him and what-not. Still, he claims he’s unaffected.

Snatching his first day off in months from his shoots, dubs and again whatnot, Kunal Khemu talks to me over a cuppa of capuccino:

Give me all the news.
News? You should be giving me some. Okay, I’ve been shooting 24 x 7, I was in Pune completing a schedule of Priyadarshan’s Dhol. We’ve shot a dance sequence. I’ve been promoting Traffic Signal simultaneously. So, I’ve had no time to breathe easy.

Any pre-release jitters about Traffic Signal?
Hmm, I’m quite anxious and excited to see the end-result. I haven’t been able to watch the rushes properly. I want to watch it with the audience in a cinema hall with a lower stalls ticket. That’s where you get the first hand public review of the film and your performance.

After Kalyug, both the audience as well as critics will have high expectations from me. Such expectations help an actor to better his earlier performance.

I’m told that the promos have been quite well-received. Still, I don’t count my chicken before they’re hatched. I’ve never expected to become an overnight sensation..

Are you making a conscious effort to break your good fella image?
As an adult, I’m just one-film-old. Maybe, I do look like the boy next door. My role in Kalyug was of a simple guy. But I need to do more work, show variety. I’m a toddler.

What’s the update on your Bhatt camp project?
Oh! That project hasn’t progressed an inch beyond the inception stage. The Bhatts are busy with two other films. Once those are complete, they’ll take a decision on mine..

Quite a few newcomers have already started performing at stage shows. What’s keeping you away?
So far, I haven’t been lucky with song and dance sequences. I didn’t dance in Kalyug because I didn’t have a song to dance on. But I did do a dance peformance on the Sabse Favourite Kaun Awards. That was my only performance on stage. Soon, you’ll see me dancing in my films and on stage as well.
