Kunal’s is a party pad!
Tum Mile director Kunal Deshmukh claims his Pali Hill home has always been a party place.india Updated: Nov 13, 2009 21:24 IST
I have been living in my present house at Pali Hill, Bandra, ever since I was born. My parents moved into this house after they got married. Till I was in college, however, we only owned half of this house. It was a two-bedroom-hall-kitchen flat then. After my dad bought the adjoining flat, the house doubled in size. When we bought the second half of the house, even my dog wouldn’t go to that side of the house (laughs).
Taking a tour
Presently, we have five bedrooms — one each for my sister, parents, grandmom, myself and the last room has been made into my dad’s office. Pali Hill has always been home to me. What I like about this area is that it’s peaceful and largely residential. In the evening, I go for a jog on Pali Hill and at Carter Road. Fortunately for me, we have a local DVD parlour and a café nearby. My mom deals in art and that’s why we have a few big pieces of art at our place. Whenever we go for a holiday, we pick up something for our house — it’s been a family tradition. And thus the house décor keeps changing. Every three-four years, we come back to a home with changes. That’s more to do with my mom. She keeps doing something or the other with the house. Her next plan is to make the kitchen an open one.
My room, however, has been completely done up by yours truly. One of the walls in it is decorated with photographs that I have clicked while travelling. I wouldn’t say that I am a cleanliness freak or my room is the neatest, but it’s quite in shape nevertheless. I like off-white walls, which makes the room look big, and I like to throw in colour with paintings, sofas, curtains and artifacts. I have posters of Scarface, Jerry McGuire, Braveheart, Terminator 2 and The Matrix from when I was in school.
An exclusive insight
We host parties at my place all the time. My friends keep asking me, “So when is the next party at your home?” Another part of our lives is the pet dog we’ve had for last 12 years. She was trained not to bump into furniture or break anything. But one thing that always breaks is the glass cabinet kept in the hall. To help keep the house clean, we abide by one rule — you can’t smoke it any other part of the house but my room. My friends only smoke in my room.
Also, I don’t believe in Vaastu and Feng Shui but my mother does. Our house is done entirely on those principles. At the top corner of our hall, there is a picture of my parents, which nobody can see. It’s kept there according to the Vaastu shastra. but yes, I am extremely superstitious. I want everything to do well, so I’m all for Vaastu, Feng Shui, Numerology… everything (laughs). I keep telling my father that I’ll buy my own house a few years later. I know if I move out, I’ll end up living in a pigeonhole. But for the time being, I’m happy living with my parents.
