Kupwara Judicial Magistrate JA Geelani has dismissed the police closure report in 1991 Kunan Poshpora mass rape case and ordered further investigation to be completed within three months by an officer not below the rank of an SSP.

The petitioners were demanding re-investigation by a Special Investigation Team (SIT), headed by an officer of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP).

The court said it lacked the authority to order a probe by the SIT.

Parvez Imroz, counsel for the victims, today said a protest petition was filed on June 10 this year against the closure report of the Jammu and Kashmir police, before the Judicial Magistrate, Kupwara.

He said on June 13, the Chief Prosecuting Officer (CPO) filed objections, and oral arguments were exchanged before the Magistrate yesterday.
