Residents of Kupwara district today staged a demonstration at civil secretariat here protesting against the alleged discrimination in state Government's recruitment policy.
Over two dozen residents led by PDP MLA Abdul Haq Khan staged a sit-in and shouted slogans demanding scraping of the inter-district recruitment policy, police said.
In a related protest, two unemployed youth from the district climbed atop trees outside Service Selection Board (SSB) headquarters at Rambagh in uptown city and threatened suicide, they said. Security personnel, however, reached the scene and persuaded the youth to climb down, they said.
Earlier, a complete shutdown was observed in Kupwara on Monday in response to the call for a strike given by a coordination committee comprising legislators, lawyers, intellectuals, traders and transporters of the district.
The present policy allows candidates to apply for district and divisional cadres posts irrespective of whether they belong to that particular district.
Legislators of ruling National Conference and opposition PDP from the district have termed the recruitment policy as sheer discrimination against the unemployed youth.
"How can the unemployed youth of Kalaroos, Karnah and Lolab compete with the youth of other districts who enjoy regular coaching at tuition centres and study in prestigious institutes," they asked.
