Communal tension gripped Kushinagar district, nearly 330 km from Lucknow, on Tuesday evening when a group of youngsters participated in a Muharram procession sporting t-shirts of the Pakistan cricket team.

Residents said the incident took place in Chappar village under Kubersthan police station area when some locals objected to the t-shirts and the youngsters wearing it stood their ground.

The incident led to a scuffle between members of two communities. However, no injuries were reported after the incident.

However, the situation was controlled by police who asked the boys to take off the t-shirts.

As of Wednesday, the situation was tense, but under control with heavy police force deployed in the area.

Talking to HT on phone, Kushinagar superintendent of police (SP) Lalit Kumar Singh said, “An additional SP rank officer has been asked to probe the issue, as it could have created a major law and order problem if it hadn’t been controlled with the timely intervention of the police.”
