KVS Bhopal region team wins gold medal

KENDRIYA VIDYALAYA Sangathan, Bhopal region, basketball team won gold at the 37th Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan National Sports Meet held in Pune from October 8 to 12. Beating Dehradun by a margin of 53-39, Bhopal region clinched gold for the first time in the tourney.

KENDRIYA VIDYALAYA Sangathan, Bhopal region, basketball team won gold at the 37th Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan National Sports Meet held in Pune from October 8 to 12. Beating Dehradun by a margin of 53-39, Bhopal region clinched gold for the first time in the tourney.

Talking to Hindustan Times, Kendriya Vidyalaya No 1 Principal Sunil Shrivastava said, “Fetching a gold medal in this event was my dream because Bhopal region basketball team had the calibre to win this kind of championship but it had no experience of playing continuous matches in tight schedules.

With a view to overcome these shortcomings, we organised a week-long pre-training camp before participating in the competition.

Several strong teams from Bhopal played matches with KVS, Bhopal region team in a bid to better their chances.” The team got valuable coaching from Hari Shankar Kushwaha, PET, KV No 1 and Amit Richariya PET, KV Bairagarh. Disclosing the key to victory, Kushwaha said, “Playing with City teams before the tournament has been of tremendous help as it turned our weakness into strength thereby helping us win the gold.”

Deepak Verma of KV, Bairagarh headed the 12-member team while Kuldeep Sharma of KV No 1was the vice-captain. Besides, there were three players from KV No 1, six from KV, Bairagarh and one from KV, Gwalior.

Apart from this, Bhopal region also bagged prizes in other events. In girls category, it won two gold medals in skating, one silver in table tennis, one gold and five silver in badminton, one bronze in athletics, a gold and silver each in swimming, two gold, one silver and three bronze medals in taek-wondo, three gold in shooting and three gold in kayaking.

The boys won two gold, two silver and one bronze in shooting, one gold and one silver in taek-wondo, four gold in kayaking and a silver medal in the under-16 cricket tournament.

More than 7,000 students from 17 regions of the country took part in the meet. Assistant Commissioner, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, Dr V Vijayalakshmi congratulated the entire Bhopal region team for an exemplary performance.
