Despite the Supreme Court ban on bonded labour, a large number of bonded labourers have been working in various brick kilns of Aligarh and Hathras district.

Labour Department of Uttar Pradesh has rescued 605 bonded labourer from the clutches of brick kiln owners including 21 from Aligarh and 17 from Bulandshahr.

Sources said that most of the kiln labourers belong to Atrauli tehsil. More than twenty thousand labourers are hired to work at various kilns situated in UP, Haryana, Punjab and Delhi.

Some organised gangs arrange bonded labourers. They pay advance money to the labourers and send them to different places on higher payment. Nearly 1000 bonded laborers have been rescued from different places in Haryana, Punjab and Delhi.

Most of these labourers belong to scheduled castes and scheduled tribe communities.
