The human rights situation in Sri Lanka has deteriorated "significantly" since late last year, amid an escalation of violence between rebels and security forces, the United Nations said on Wednesday.
The UN's envoy on extra-judicial killings, Philip Alston, also said there was an urgent need for an international human rights monitoring mission in the country to prevent abuses of human rights.
Both the government and the ethnic Tamil rebels need to demonstrate genuine respect for human rights, he said in a statement.
