Morning walkers at BHU were shocked to find a young law student hanging to death from a mango tree at the varsity soccer stadium on Thursday on morning.

Gaurav Gupta (25), an LLB First Year student, was found hanging from a mango tree through a nylon rope in the soccer stadium of BHU Amphitheatre Complex on Thursday morning.

Gaurav, a native of Chapra in Bihar was an inmate of Room No 28 of Dr Bhagwandas Hostel and the only son of his parents, whom he had sent an SMS last night, which read that he had failed to fulfill their expectations, BHU Chief Procter Prof HCS Rathore told HT.

After getting the news of incident, BHU Security Staff as also the cops from Lanka Police Station led by BHU Police Chowki in-charge Shyamji Yadav rushed to the spot, to take the body in possession.

Prof Rathore said Gaurav’s parents have been informed and are rushing to Varanasi.

As per cops of Lanka Police Station, the SMS sent by Gaurav to his parents read ‘Mom-Dad please forgive me for not meeting your expectations,’ which suggested the budding legal eagle was under acute depression.

Sensing trouble, Gaurav’s parents had responded to his SMS identically messaging him “not to worry as they were worried for him and urged to please come back home.”

Gaurav, whose elder sister was electrocuted a few years back, had taken admission in LLB at BHU Law School in 2007, but left it a few months later to go to New Delhi to prepare for competitive exams.

Only this year, Gaurav returned to BHU and took re-admission in BHU Law School, after failing to crack success in competitive exams in New Delhi and was since then upset and depressed about his future, other inmates of Dr Bhagwandas Hostel told HT.

“Prime facie it appears a case of suicide, but only further investigations will corroborate it,” the BHU Chief Procter maintained.

It’s fourth case of suicide by students at BHU campus, with three female students of BA and MD (Anesthesia) ending life in similar manner earlier in 2009.

It’s also the second case of suicide by an inmate of Dr Bhagwandas Hostel, as in 2008 another inmate of the hostel which houses law students of BHU had hanged self to death in his hostel Room No 11.
