Agitated lawyers blocked the Sohna-Alwar road near Gurgaon for hours, leading to a massive traffic jam that spilled over to the Delhi-Gurgaon expressway.

The lawyers were protesting the alleged assault of a 26-year -old counsel and his wife by policemen.

The victim, D S Yadav, claimed that he was abused, dragged out of his car and beaten up in full public view in Udyog Vihar.

Yadav said he was in Udyog Vihar to drop his wife at her office, on his way to the Gurgaon district court.

“As I approached Hotel Trident, a police constable, who was manning traffic on the jammed road abused me, charging me with wrong driving,” said Yadav. “When I objected, he started thumping the window of my car.”

Yadav said an altercation broke out between him and the constable. “He called two more policemen. The three dragged me out of my car and started beating me,” the young man claimed.

“They manhandled my wife too when she tried to intervene.”

As news of the alleged assault spread, lawyers from the district court blocked the Sohna-Alwar road outside. The lawyers demanded charges be filed against theconstables and suspension of their services.

Alok Mittal, the Joint Commissioner of Police, said that as the lawyers did not approach police officials, there was no question of a FIR or any other action.

Mittal said the lawyers even assaulted his men.
