A Delhi Police Sub Inspector (SI) and a Head Constable (HC) were allegedly thrashed by lawyers inside the Ghaziabad District Court complex Friday afternoon.

The lawyers apprehended the policemen trying to forcibly take away a man who had appeared for a hearing at a Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court on Friday, police officials said.

Sub-Inspector B.L. Sharma and Head-Constable Arvind Kumar—currently posted at Anand Vihar police station in East Delhi—said that they were thrashed by lawyers and later handed over to the Kavi Nagar police station officials.

“Both had come to file an application at a CJM court in Ghaziabad in a case related to one Manoj Kumar who is wanted in a case of cheating. They were thrashed by lawyers, who said that both the policemen were trying to forcibly take away Kumar,” ASP Happy Guptan told Hindustan Times.

On the other hand, Ghaziabad Bar Association (GBA)Secretary Vinod Verma denied the thrashing incident.

“I was not present at the spot. But none of the lawyers were involved in the incident,” Verma told Hindustan Times.

Meanwhile, a complaint was forwarded by a lawyer – Sanjay Tyagi – at Kavi Nagar police station against the two men and a similar complaint was lodged by the policemen late Friday afternoon, police officials said.

SI Sharma told Hindustan Times that they had come to file an application at the Ghaziabad CJM court and had all official clearances and papers along with them.

“The accused’s lawyer called on other advocates and soon we were surrounded by 100 of them,” Sharma told HT at Kavi Nagar police station.

“They thrashed us badly before the police could arrive. We tried to explain but no one heard us.Our ID-cards were also snatched by them,” he added.
