The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) in Kerala has made substantial gains over the ruling CPM-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) in the municipal elections, six months before assembly polls in the state.

The UDF won 42 of the 78 municipalities where votes were counted on Wednesday. The LDF got only 18 seats.

“It is a verdict against the government. Despite all malpractices and violence, the UDF managed an impressive victory.

The chief minister should quit now,” Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Ramesh Chennithala said.

Chief minister VS Achutha-nandan described the defeat as a temporary setback.

“The UDF managed the win with the help of communal and fascist forces,” he said.

Of the five city corporations, all of which were held by the LDF, the UDF wrested Thrissur and Kochi. In Kochi it returned to power after 30 years.

In Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam, the LDF retained power with wafer-thin majorities. Counting of votes in Kozhikode, the fifth city corporation, has been postponed to October 31.

In the 14 district councils, the UDF won eight and the LDF six.

The UDF has also notched up substantial gains at the block and gram panchayat levels, for which counting is still on.
