The Left parties on Wednesday called upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi to fast-track development schemes in Andhra Pradesh, urging him to make an announcement in this regard at the foundation stone-laying ceremony of Amaravati — the designated capital of the state — on Thursday.

In a joint letter addressed to Modi, CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury and his CPI counterpart S Sudhakar Reddy expressed concern that the schemes assured ahead of the bifurcation of erstwhile Andhra Pradesh last year were still on paper which had affected the development of the economically-backward regions of the state.

“We are of the strong opinion that promises made to the people and assurances given to Parliament must be immediately addressed and consequently, all the proposed schemes for development are put in operation,” they wrote.

“Though delayed, at least now, an announcement by you redeeming these promises at the foundation ceremony at Amaravati would be appropriate,” their letter further said.
