LESA officer fires shot to escape public wrath

A PANICKED LESA official fired in the air when angry Balaganj residents tried to gherao him at the sub-station on Tuesday in protest against a 24-hour blackout in the area.

Superintendent of Police (West) DK Rai and senior district administration officials reached the spot and tried to defuse the situation before it could snowball into a major clash.

Later, counter FIRs were lodged in Thakurganj Police Station.   

The incident took place when the residents of Mari Mata Ka Mandir of Balaganj area reached the LESA office in Thakurganj area and started agitating against the authorities. They were agitating for power supply in their areas was disrupted for more than 24 hours. The mob reportedly misbehaved and beat up a LESA staff members Bijju present at the station. When people tried to gherao SDO Aslam Hussain, he opened fire in the air.

Police reached on the spot and tried to resolve the matter. Later, LESA officials went on strike demanding their security. The power supply in the area remained disrupted for a few hours more. In the evening, the power employees called off their strike after intervention of higher officials. The LESA Employees’ Union demanded appropriate security for employees. LESA General Manager AK Singh was not available for comments.
