Vaishali Bhambri

Dhruv Malik, the lead guitarist of Delhi based band Ebonix, talks about the band, its music and more. Ebonix is one of the finalists of Hard Rock Rising 2012.

What sort of music can we expect from Ebonix?
We are a progressive rock act and we like to combine good old thrashy riffs with complicated chord structures and progressions. Deep vocals with good lyrics set us apart.

How did the band come together?
We started off as a school band. As we entered college, we understood the entire music scene and after a few line up changes, we were ready to go.

Why this name?
We wanted something that everyone would question. The actual word is ebonics, an extinct language. We gave it a rock feel and decided upon Ebonix.

What do you think people remember the most about your gigs?
Our songs are very catchy. Our friends have been humming our song Killer On The Loose, all day long.

What do you think of the music scene in Delhi? Has it changed over the years?
Delhi has a long way to go. Metal music is going smooth, but there are only a few good rock acts . But the situation is improving.

What has been the inspiring song, event and artist for the band?
We started off listening to alternative stuff and gradually went into progressive music.

Do you guys enjoy performing in Delhi? and why?
Delhi’s amazing. The crowd is enthusiastic, and we are happy that they cheer for us. So yes, we love Delhi.

What would you say is the best place in Delhi to make music?
As far as making music is concerned, we jam at jam pads all around Delhi, but we do most of our writing back at home. We record and send it to everyone, and then we jam on it.

Would you say Delhi inspires artists?
Delhi does inspire artists. We have seen bands rise from scratch, and do great things. That’s what got us going in the first place.

If you could play at any gig in the world, which one would it be?
If we’re calling shots, we would like to play a gig where Dream Theatre is listening to us. They are our true inspiration!

What has been the best moment for the band?
When we recorded our first song. It crossed 200 plays in a day and its nearing the 1200 plays mark now, in less than 5 months.

What is Hard Rock Rising?
An annual hunt for rockstars across the country, the winner of this battle of bands gets a chance to take the stage at Hard Rock Calling 2012, a music festival to be held in London’s Hyde Park in July. The concert in the British capital will be headlined by American singing legend Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. The second and third prize winners will win cash prizes. The registration started on January 6, and after auditions, three bands made it to the finals.
