Letter received by Shopian police was from their own constable

india Updated: Dec 14, 2009 21:32 IST

The anonymous letter received by Shopian police during the probe into the death of two women which claimed involvement of their family member was allegedly written by a local police constable to divert the probe, CBI on Monday said.

The agency, which submitted its investigation report before the Jammu and Kashmir High Court, has alleged handwriting analysis of the letter, supposedly written by a classmate of one of the victims 17-year old Aasiya Jan, has shown that it was written by Constable Mohd Yaseen Ganie prompting CBI to file a separate complaint against him.

"The handwriting expert of Forensic Science Laboratory Srinagar has attributed the authorship of this letter to Constable Mohd Yaseen Ganie No 538/SPN, who had written the said letter to mislead/divert the investigation from its logical conclusion," CBI alleged in its report.

The letter, which surfaced from nowhere in the alleged rape and murder case, claimed the writer was a male classmate of Aasiya and alleged she might have been murdered by her own family member.

The letter, which was received at a police station in this newly-carved out district in Kashmir valley, claimed the two were on friendly terms and this was not liked by her brother Shakeel Ahmed Ahanghar.
