THE WOMEN’S teams from all the four regions (Central, Eastern Western and Southern) have entered the semifinals of the table tennis in the five-day all-India LIC sports festival that began at the Tatya Tope stadium on Monday.
Chess, table tennis, carrom and badminton matches were organised on the first day of the sports festival. Playing in Group-A of the women’s section, the Eastern region team defeated Central region by 3-1 and Southern region by 3-0.
In the same section, Central region defeated Southern region by 3-0. In Group-B, Western region defeated Southern Region 3-1 and Northern region by 3-0.
In women’s chess, Grandmaster Swati Ghate defeated T Costa in just half an hour. In men, Sriram Ojha, Vishal sarin, DK Sharma, Atanu Lahri and Anoop Deshmukh won their respective matches.
The Western region team won its matches in badminton and entered the semifinal. Western region defeated Northern region by 3-0 and Central region by 2-0.
In carrom team championship, Eastern region defeated Northern region by 3-0, Southern region defeated Northern region 2-1 and Western region defeated Central region by 3-0.
Earlier, chief guest of the informal opening ceremony, zonal manager RV Rao inaugurated the meet. The formal opening will be organised on January 10 by LIC Chairman TS Vijayan. Director Dilip Tiku, senior divisional manager SD Nadkarni, V Balgopal and others were present.
