Highlight Story

Light is an important element in any house since it uplifts your mood. Light corresponds to the principle of sight and is represented by the sattva guna, the energy of clear perceptions and pure knowledge.

Joy is the inherent sattva attribute which gives both pleasure and illumination. The sattva corner of a property is the northeast, which represents creative and positive energy — as opposed to the heat and fire of the southeast. So, it is better to invite natural light from the northeast corner of your house.

Our ancient rishis recommended that we should design and orient our homes to maximise our exposure to natural sunlight. Not only did they recommend homes with an abundance of windows and doors, they also suggested that the different types of rooms and areas within our homes should be determined according to the direction of sunlight at various times of day.

This helps to maintain the natural rhythm of our body and mind, which fluctuates according to the movement of the Earth around the Sun.

Rainbow effect

Natural sunlight, which combines all the colours of the rainbow, is the most balanced and energising source of light. The importance of sunlight is reflected in its universal significance as a symbol of the divine.

Lighting is another element that can be used to balance the yin or yang of a room. Yang rooms should have brighter and more suffused lighting. Yin rooms should have more intimate and localised lighting, with the possible exception of the bathroom.

All living things are naturally drawn towards light. So if you leave a light on in any area where you would like to see more activity, it will be practical. This is a particularly effective cure in the domains of relationships, knowledge and health.

Dim lighting can create headaches and depression. Bring in more light to improve your health. Lighting is unique in the sense that you can change the appearance and ambience of the room at the flick of a switch. By using a range of lighting in a room, you can change the mood from bright and lively to subdued and intimate to suit the occasion.

In fact, there are many ways to harness the power of light to enhance a room

Up lights: These can increase the brightness in the area where spot lighting can't be used, and the up lights are less obvious.

Spotlights: These pick out features in your room such as flower arrangements, paintings, sculptures and plants. This type of lighting effect stimulates the flow of chi energy.

Halogen low voltage: This is ideal for increasing the flow of chi energy through stagnant places.

Candles: All shape and sizes, grouped on a ceramic platter, or placed in decorative glass candle holders are yin and a source of gentle light in the room. They also create a romantic ambience.

Even after a tired day, often you find it difficult to sleep. This is because at work you sit under strong artificial lights, which translates into spending several hours in a yang environment. The sudden switch to a yin environment is very difficult.

Subtle lighting in the lounge helps to solve this problem. Also lighting a candle stimulates chi in that area. A candle in the eastern area of the room will promote optimism and health without affecting the balance of the room. Similarly a, candle in the southwest will promote tranquility.
